Videos: U.S. B-1B Bombers Fly Near North Korea Following North Korea Nuclear Test
The United States of America on Tuesday sent two nuclear-capable supersonic bombers streaking over ally South Korea in a show of force meant to cow North Korea after its recent nuclear test.
The B-1B bombers, escorted by U.S. and South Korean jets, were seen by an Associated Press photographer as they flew over Osan Air Base, which is 75 miles from the border with North Korea. The bombers were likely to return to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, without landing in South Korea.
Such flyovers are common when always high animosity rises on the Korean Peninsula, which is technically in a state of war as there has never been a peace treaty to officially end the 1950-53 Korean War.
South Korea does not have nuclear weapons and relies on the U.S. "nuclear umbrella" as a deterrent to North Korea. Washington also stations more than 28,000 troops in the South, and tens of thousands more in Japan.
North Korea is keenly aware of the U.S. presence on the peninsula and of what it considers the U.S. nuclear threat. It uses such flyovers and the American military influence in the South in its propaganda as alleged proof of U.S. hostility that it claims as the reason it needs a nuclear bomb program.
Last week's nuclear test, the North's fifth, was its most powerful to date. Pyongyang's claim to have used "standardized" warheads in the detonation makes some outsiders worry that it is making headway in its push to develop small, sophisticated warheads that can be mounted on missiles that can reach the U.S. mainland.
Nuclear expert Siegfried Hecker, who has regularly visited the North's nuclear facilities, estimates the North may have enough nuclear fuel for about 20 bombs by the end of 2016 and the ability to add about seven new bombs a year.
"Left unchecked, Pyongyang will likely develop the capability to reach the continental United States with a nuclear tipped missile in a decade or so," Siegfried wrote on the North Korea-focused website 38 North. He said that more troubling was the recent test successes may give Pyongyang a false sense of confidence.
Six-nation diplomatic talks aimed at ridding the North of its bombs have been stalled since the last round of meetings in late 2008. Since then, Pyongyang has ramped up both its ballistic missile and nuclear bomb development, despite an increasing raft of sanctions.
After the test, the North's nuclear weapons institute said it will take unspecified measures to further boost its nuclear capability, which analysts said hinted at a possible sixth nuclear test.
South Korea's Defense Ministry said Monday that South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities believe North Korea has the ability to detonate another atomic device at any time at one of its tunnels at its main Punggye-ri nuclear test site, where the five previous atomic explosions took place. Ministry officials refused to say what specific evidence pointed to another possible nuclear test.
Seoul, Washington and their allies have vowed to apply more pressure and sanctions after the test, the second this year.
In yet another tough statement against North Korea, South Korea's President Park Geun-hye on Tuesday ordered her military to be ready to "finish off" North Korea should it fire a nuclear missile toward South Korea. She already said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's "mental state is spiraling out of control" and that his government shows "fanatic recklessness."

$20m accounts: Patience Jonathan May Lose her N10bn hotel to FG of Nigeria
Dame Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, may lose to the Federal Government, a N10bn hotel allegedly belonging to her if she fails to explain how she came about some funds allegedly traced to her accounts. An EFCC source told Punch yesterday
“This is one of the questions she may have to answer as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission continues investigation into the $20m found in five accounts she has laid claim to.
Patience in April 2015, barely a month before the end of her husband’s tenure.
According to a UK business newspaper, The Financial Times, the hotel, which has imported state-of-the-art furniture, can compete with other luxury hotels in developed countries
The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay, told Punch that the EFCC had the right to investigate anybody who was living above his or her means as he wondered how Patience, who was a civil servant and never held any government position, could have billions in her bank accounts. He said.
“The EFCC and ICPC Acts have provisions under which they can ask the court to freeze the account of a person if a person’s capacity to earn is below the amount of money that the person appears to have.
“If you are living a lavish lifestyle and it appears you don’t have the means to have acquired the property and the wealth you have, the EFCC is free to probe you.”
Dame Patience recently sued Skye Bank and the EFCC for freezing four company accounts which have a balance of $15m
The former first lady also has another account with the title, ‘Patience Ibifaka Jonathan’ which has a balance of $5m. The account is, however, still active.

Ukraine Military reports that a Russian Soldier surrendered in the East, Leaked Vital Information to Ukrainian Forces
Ukraine’s military intelligence has announced that a Russian serviceman in east Ukraine has given himself up and shared information about the pro-Russian forces in the region.
Ukrainian forces have been fighting armed separatist groups in its eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions (known collectively as Donbas) since 2014. Ukraine and its partners in NATO have repeatedly pointed to examples of Russian personnel and military kit leading the so-called separatist push, however, Russia has denied its forces are in Ukraine in any official capacity. As a result, Russia does not see itself as a force involved in the conflict.
The Ukrainian armed forces stationed near the contact line (ATO) have said they currently have a man by the name of Denis Sidorov in custody, who has identified himself as a Moscow native and a member of the Russian armed forces.
According to a statement on the service’s Facebook page, the 35-year-old from Russia’s motorized rifle brigade surrendered to Ukrainian forces at the town of Shiroka Balka. He has apparently handed Ukrainian forces information about Russian formations on its territory.
The man confirmed suspicions that his unit’s commander had changed, with Colonel Alexei Berdnikov taking over from Igor Timofeev. Sidornov also apparently told Ukraine that a high number of Russian troops were moving through Ukrainian territory.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Philipine President Rodrigo Duterte calls for the withdawwal of U.S. Forces from Philippine
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has called for the withdrawal of U.S. military from a restive southern island on Monday, fearing an American troop presence could complicate offensives against Islamist militants notorious for beheading Westerners.
Duterte, who was in the spotlight last week over his televised tirade against the United States and President Barack Obama — said special forces now training Filipino troops were high-value targets for the ISIS-linked Abu Sayyaf as counter-insurgency operations intensify.
"These special forces, they have to go, I do not want a rift with America. But they have to go." Duterte said in a speech during an oath-taking ceremony for new officials.
He added. "Americans, they will really kill them, they will try to kidnap them to get ransom."
The comment by Duterte, a former southern mayor known for his terse words and volatile temperament, adds to uncertainty about what impact his rise to the presidency will have on one of Washington's best alliances in Asia.
Duterte wants an independent foreign policy and says close ties with the United States are crucial, but he has frequently accused the former colonial power of hypocrisy when criticized for his deadly drugs war.
Some U.S. special forces have been killed in the southern Philippines since 2002, when Washington deployed soldiers to train and advise local units fighting Abu Sayyaf in Operation Enduring Freedom, part of its global anti-terror strategy.
The U.S. program was discontinued in the Philippines in 2015 but a small troop presence has remained for logistics and technical support. Washington has shifted much of its security focus in the Philippines towards the South China Sea.
In his speech to officials on Monday, Duterte repeated comments from last week when he accused the United States of committing atrocities against Muslims over a century ago on Jolo island.
President Obama cancels meeting the Philippine President after insult.
