Mayor says at least three killed after gunman shoots several officers near police headquarters in Baton Rouge.
A search is under way for at least two suspects after three police officers were killed in Baton Rouge
At least three police officers and a suspect have been shot and killed in Baton Rouge, the second largest city in the US state of Louisiana.
Another two suspects were at large following Sunday's shooting, the East Baton Rouge Police Department reported.
In an interview with national broadcaster NBC, Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden confirmed that three officers had been killed in the fatal shooting near the city's police headquarters on Sunday.
Other officers were reportedly injured and hospitalised.
Police reportedly received a call about a "suspicious person walking down Airline Highway with an assault rifle," a source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN. When police arrived to the scene, the man opened fire.
"We don't know yet whether they've been able to arrest the gunman in this case. One eyewitness told a local TV station that a man dressed all in black just started firing indiscriminately between a service station and a convenience store," Al Jazeera's Rosiland Jordan reported.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards referred to the incident as "an unspeakable and unjustified attack on all of us".
He said in a statement: "Rest assured, every resource available to the State of Louisiana will be used to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
