Six people were killed and eight wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Quebec City mosque during Sunday night prayers, in what Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called a "terrorist attack on Muslims".
Police said two suspects had been arrested, but gave no details about them or what prompted the attack.
Initially, the mosque president said five people were killed and a witness said up to three gunmen had fired on about 40 people inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre. Police said only two people were involved in the attack.
"Six people are confirmed dead - they range in age from 35 to about 70," Quebec provincial police spokeswoman Christine Coulombe told reporters, adding eight people were wounded and 39 were unharmed.
The mosque's president, Mohamed Yangui, who was not inside when the shooting occurred, said he got frantic calls from people at evening prayers.
"Why is this happening here? This is barbaric,” he said.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement: "We condemn this terrorist attack on Muslims in a center of worship and refuge".
“Muslim-Canadians are an important part of our national fabric, and these senseless acts have no place in our communities, cities and country."
When I said terrorists are different from Muslims , people argued with me.. Why would they go to mosque to kill Muslims if these terrorists are really and truly Muslims? ... These terrorists are terrorists... Nothing more and better to qualify them.
Did you know that most of the killings done by BOKO HARAM terrorists gang in Nigeria are being done on Muslims? They've been killing Muslims. They are nothing, but terrorists. We don't need to link their terrorism with any religion..
Let's forget about these religions, because religions believe has caused more problems in this world and dividing this world. Let's face the reality..You are a terrorists if you deliberately killed someone unlawfully...
This is not only an attack on Christians or non believers, this is an attack on all human beings, regardless of your religion or believe..."They are terrorists". We must not condemn Islam or any other religion for terrorism.. We all must stand up together to condemn terrorists.
We all must stand up together to fight terrorism... We must stand up together against terrorists ..We must fight them together .. Government can't do it all alone.. We must stand as one against terrorism regardless of your religion or believe.. This is the time for all human beings to come together as one to fight terrorists.. We must forget about our religion and fight terrorism.. They must not defeat us... We must defeat terrorism.
And what is the first step to take in defeating terrorism? The first step we need to take in order to defeat terrorism is by stopping religion discrimination, because terrorists have hijacked a religion and turned it into something else. And people see the news and think it must be all.
